Washington, DC – District of Columbia Public Schools Interim Superintendent
Robert C. Rice, DC
Board of Education President Peggy Cooper Cafritz and members of the Board were
saddened to
learn of the untimely death of Mary Rush, a first grade teacher at Watkins Elementary

Earlier today, Rush collapsed on the school’s playground and was transported

she later died. Tomorrow, crisis counselors will be on-site at Watkins and Wilson
Senior High School,
where two of Rush’s children are students.
“This is a devastating loss for our students and school system,”
said Rice. “Ms. Rush was one of our
most dedicated and loved teachers. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family
and friends in this
time of sadness.”
